Lighting Research

In order to successful attract my target audience I will also have to apply added concentration to my lighting along with my shot types. Lighting is very important in order to take high quality images that stand out to my target audience and ill be attempting to represent current themes used in successful regional magazines. As my images are going to be taking outside, I need to ensure that I choose the correct time of day so that the lighting is what I want and to give me a professional edge. I won't be using any studio equipment in my outdoor shoot so I will explore how to use the outside light effectively.
The quality of light is one of the main successes of a landscape photograph, but cannot be controlled. There are four main types of lighting: Top, side, back and front. I will need to consider how my scene will look under each type of lighting and which one is most effective and will portray my subject in the correct position and time for the best results. I will now go into more detail about the four lighting types.
Front and Top:
Front and Top lighting types are similar as they regard the main light source (the sun), when shooting outside this main light source can play on the mood and feeling of your photographs. This lighting can be tough to create a successful photo as its regards the light source to be above or behind the camera which gives a flat image which lacks in texture, form and shape and even quite possible your shadow could enter the frame. As this lighting technique is rarely used in this landscapes I will have to explore other techniques to focus on.

Side Lighting:
Side Lighting is a lot more effective in order to create a successful landscape photograph. Side lighting is an ideal light source to revel the images texture, shape and form. It creates subtle shows that make the image look more life-like and its then an image that the audience can relate too. As the light death increases its creates a more three dimensional image and highlights more features of the photograph.

Back Lighting:
Back Lighting is when the the main light source is in front of the camera and the subject. Back lighting is another successful techniques that creates engaging images but is a lot more difficult to shoot because of the extreme brightness between the subject and the background and also it can create lens flare. Back lighting is the only lighting technique in which you can create a silhouette of your subject. Back lightning is best taken at the sunrise or sunset in order to get the best results.

Shooting at different times of the year can actually produce different result seven if your position and angle remained the same. For an example the colour of water. If you was striving to get a nice turquoise colour the middle of the day is prime time as the main light source penetrates the water in summer. However take the same photo in winter and your results won't be the same as the sun doesn't travel straight overhead in shorter winter days. To change where the light source is coming from you quite simply just need to change where your standing.

I will be looking to take a lot of landscape scenic shots as I'm constructing a regional magazine an the lighting will greatly effect the standard of my photos. I have already shortlisted possible locations within my region where I will be looking to capture my images and all of them depend on the light. This means that it will have an effect on planning as I will need to plan to visit these locations where the day is nice and taken my previous research above into account to get the possible images.
